Vargas

Having spent the first half of his
life in Guatemala and other countries of Central America, Guillermo
Vargas now resides in Southern California with his father, mother,
and six siblings. Guillermo attended Quest in 1998, worked for
the Quest Committee at Stanford during his college freshman
year, and will be working for Quest the upcoming year. Guillermo
will enter his sophomore year at Stanford University in the
fall.
Academically, Guillermo’s interests
range from Product Design to Comparative Studies in Race and
Ethnicity, Urban Studies to Art History, Philosophy to Gender
Studies. Guillermo enjoys engaging in conversations which “make
people think”, taking hikes and immersing himself equally in
the foothills or in the city, meditating, and opening up to
his canine best friend, Chubbies. Although he knows he doesn’t
have the answers, Guillermo has developed a reflex to question
any social construction he sees or hears. His excitement for
life and philosophy is essential to the foundation of his nature,
and an overall compassion for all peoples of the world motivate
him to want to travel all over the world. A native Spanish speaker,
Guillermo taught himself Portuguese and foresees Italian next
on his list.
In his senior year of high school,
Guillermo was co-captain of his high school’s boys’ cross-country
team that won the State Championships and set a state record
for the lowest team score. During his college freshman year,
Guillermo was a member of Stanford University’s men’s cross-country
team and a member of the 2000 NCAA Championship track and field
team. During track season, Guillermo specializes in the steeplechase
and competes in middle distance running events. An avid runner,
he also enjoys participating in half-marathons and local road
races. Guillermo also is a skilled volleyball player and an
exceptional dancer to and a quick learner of any Latin dance
you can name. |
